Beyond Las Vegas - January 2012

By Kemp Harr & Jessica Chevalier

It is increasingly difficult to know which companies are definitely not going to have a presence in Las Vegas that coincides with Hanley Wood’s annual Surfaces Expo. Some companies opt to have a private area adjacent to the show floor, others set up in nearby hotels and yet others forgo the Vegas experience all together. Starting in 2003, the two largest residential flooring producers, Shaw and Mohawk, opted to focus their new product introductions in a regional show format that runs the whole month of January. In many of the major markets like Dallas and Atlanta, both of these companies schedule their meetings at the same time in nearby hotels.

This year, however, Mohawk has made the decision to host its Western Region Market right outside the main hall of the show in the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, so they are, in essence, doing both Surfaces and their own conference simultaneously. For this reason, we’re previewing the firm in this section, along with the regional show introductions of the other carpet giant, Shaw. Daltile and Quickstep will continue to be on the Expo’s show floor but Mohawk’s carpet, rugs, resilient and hardwood products will be set up literally on the other side of a wall from the show.

From a positioning standpoint, Mohawk is putting more emphasis on the Made in USA origin of most of its products—not only on the packaging and product labels but also on the retail displays.

For the complete story on these companies, see the January 2012 issue of Floor Focus Magazine.
