BDNY Returns After One-Year Hiatus

New York, NY, November 17, 2021 – BDNY (Boutique Design New York), a leading hospitality show, returned to the Jacob K. Javits Center in Manhattan from November 14 to 15, showcasing new products-from flooring and wall treatments to bedding and lighting and much more-from scores of leading suppliers. Several flooring firms were in attendance, including Mohawk’s Durkan, Tarkett Hospitality, Couristan, Novalis’ Ava, Karndean, Signature Flooring and Nanimarquina. Forbo and CM Hospitality also had a presence at the show.

The show, which had a smaller footprint this time around, was co-located with ICFF, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, typically held at the Javits Center in the summer. ICFF featured several prominent Italian tile producers under the Ceramics of Italy banner, including Ceramiche Refin, Ceramica Bardelli, Marca Corona, Mirage, Tagina and Emilceramicagroup, among others.

According to Kevin Gaffney, vice president, group show director, there were about 8,000 registered attendees for this year’s show, though the actual number that attended will probably end up between 5,000 and 6,000, compared to 8,500 in 2019, when BDNY was last held.

Durkan exhibited its Graafika line of carpet, including carpet tile, inspired by ink drawings and other art forms. The collection, displayed in a palette of blues, greys, white, gold and black, includes a sculptural design using the firm’s Definity construction with a primitive art visual, organic painterly designs and crisp linear patterning on organic fields.

Tarkett Hospitality, under the leadership of Kim Drautz, came to the BDNY to showcase the wide range of construction platforms it offers-Axminister, CYP, printed, ColorPoint, etc.-enabling clients to select the same design on any platform. Tarkett, which also offers a range of customizable hard surface flooring for the hospitality market, won the BDNY Product Design award for flooring for its Postcard collection, inspired by postcards Tarkett’s carpet designers sent to each other during the pandemic.

Signature Flooring was also at the show, with its space decked out in butterfly motifs designed by Signature’s Angie Law. The firm displayed its Emerge carpet collection in the space, and discussed its carpet technologies-ColorPoint, CYP, Infinity-as well as its carpet tile programs and its Urban Escapes LVT, launching early next year.

Novalis’ Ava brand also had a space at BDNY, exhibiting a range of LVT products, including Mrge, featuring distressed concrete and linear organic designs; Orbt LVT with multicolored glitter; Strm LVT with carpet tile visuals; and Fave, an SPC line produced at the firm’s new facility in Dalton, Georgia.

Nanimarquina, a firm headquartered in Barcelona, Spain that produces high-end handmade rugs from Pakistan and India, extended into the contract market over the summer and at BDNY it unveiled rugs for its guest room program, with styles ranging from hand-tufted and hand-loomed products to dhurries, kilims and sumacs, targeting boutique and higher-end hotels with custom programs.

Another high-end firm, Ireland’s Rhyme Studios, unveiled the Om Series, a rug and tapestry design “derived from a 1,600-year-old ‘tree’ alphabet,” as well as Modernity, a rug line inspired by Malevich, a Russian avant-garde artist from the early 20th century.

Karndean, a leading commercial LVT producer headquartered in the U.K., came to the show with a range of LVT designs, including a deconstructed encaustic visual shown on the floor of the booth. Couristan Hospitality displayed its range of carpet constructions, including Axministers, printed and tufted products, and hand-tufted rugs, as well as carpet tiles. And Emser offered a broad range of ceramic tile products, including wall tile collections.
