Shaw Plant Consolidation Results in Closure of Winchester, Tennessee Facility

Dalton, GA, February 3, 2016—Shaw announces its plan to consolidate the operations of Plant 24 in Winchester, Tennessee into other facilities in the North Georgia area.

As the company continues to invest and retool, it will continually adjust production to align with market demand and to leverage investments in more advanced technology and high-demand product categories. The production capacity for the type of commercial broadloom produced at Plant 24 will be leveraged at other Shaw facilities in the Dalton, Chatsworth and Calhoun, Georgia areas, creating a total of 81 new positions at various facilities.

This consolidation will impact 228 associates at the Winchester facility. Shaw wants to thank the associates of Plant 24 for their years of service, some of whom have been with the facility since it became part of Shaw’s portfolio in 1989. It is the company’s hope that interested associates will remain with the company and consider opportunities available at other Shaw facilities. Shaw’s Human Resources team will assist associates with benefits, retraining opportunities, and out-placement options.

The consolidation process will begin in April, with operations ceasing in August. This Winchester plant was acqured by Shaw as part of its acquistion of Evans and Black from Armstrong 27 years ago. Demand for the products produced at this plant have been on the declline due to the popularity of modular carpet tile and other surfaces within the commerical flooring market. 

Over the past two years, Shaw has committed $600 million in capital investments to enhance its operations, including expanding U.S. operations in hardwood, resilient, carpet tile, extrusion, distribution, and recycling. At full capacity, these expansions will create almost 1,000 jobs throughout the Southeast.
