Jobless Claims Rise Unexpectedly

Washington, DC, May 1, 2014 -- Initial claims for unemployment benefits rose last week, according to the Labor Department.

Initial claims for state benefits increased 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 344,000 for the week ended April 26. That was the highest level since February.

Economists had forecast that first-time applications would fall to 319,000.
