Surfaces Preview - December 2010

By Jessica Chevalier

Next year will bring significant changes to Surfaces, the flooring industry’s top trade show for residential products. The event, which runs from January 24 to 27, will be held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, rather than at the Sands Expo & Convention Center, where it has been for the past 18 years. Additionally, this year Surfaces is partnering with StonExpo|Marmomacc Americas, a stone industry show, and branding itself under the S² name.

The opening speaker for this year’s Surfaces is Aron Ralston, a rock climber who, in 2003, had his right arm pinned between a canyon wall and an 800 pound boulder and, after five days, self-amputated the arm to free himself. Ralston wrote a book about his experience, “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”; his message is an inspirational one of perseverance and overcoming adversity. A movie about Ralston’s experience, “127 Hours,” opened on November 5.

Designer Day, sponsored by Floor Focus, will take place on Wednesday this year. Designer Day features five sessions, including a tour, focused on designer education. Speakers at this year’s Designer Day include Annette Callari of Leonard’s Services and Design Centers, Victoria Redshaw of Scarlet Opus, Stephanie Vierra of Vierra Design and Education Services, LLC, Paul Berry of Aria, and Mark Woodman of Mark Woodman Design and Color.
